Smart-glasses basics

This page defines the major product categories before comparing individual models. Terms are descriptive rather than regulated, so manufacturers may use them differently.

1. What is the difference between AI glasses, smart glasses, display glasses, AR glasses, and XR glasses?

Smart glasses is the umbrella term. AI glasses emphasize an assistant, usually through microphones, speakers, and sometimes a camera. Display glasses put information or a virtual screen in the wearer’s view. AR glasses register digital content with the real world; XR glasses is a broader marketing and technical category that can include AR-style wearable displays. A product may fit several categories. 2. Do all smart glasses have a display?

No. Ray-Ban Meta and Mentra Live are camera/audio glasses without an in-lens display, while Even G2 and Halliday G2 provide heads-up information. XREAL One-series and VITURE Luma glasses primarily act as wearable displays. Ask what output hardware is present—speaker, monocular display, binocular HUD, or large virtual screen—instead of relying only on the product label. 3. Do all AI glasses have cameras?

No. A camera helps an AI answer questions about what the wearer sees, but it is not required for voice assistance, notes, translation, or prompted information. Even G2 deliberately omits a camera and speakers while providing a visual interface; Halliday G2 includes audio and a display. 4. What can camera-and-audio AI glasses do?

Typical functions include hands-free photos and video, calls, music, voice-assistant questions, object or scene queries, translation, and live sharing. Capabilities depend heavily on the phone app, account, country, and cloud service. Ray-Ban Meta is the mature consumer example; Mentra Live emphasizes programmable camera/audio workflows; Ally Solos emphasizes reading and scene description for accessibility. 5. What can heads-up-display smart glasses do?

They can show brief information without requiring the wearer to look down at a phone: notifications, notes, translation, navigation prompts, captions, timers, teleprompter text, and AI responses. They are not automatically full AR systems; many display a fixed or head-locked information panel rather than spatial objects. 6. What are wearable-display glasses?

Wearable-display glasses behave like a private monitor connected to a phone, computer, console, or companion device. XREAL One-series and VITURE Luma models use binocular micro-OLED displays for movies, games, and desktop-sized screens. 7. What is the difference between monocular and binocular smart-glasses displays?

A monocular system puts display content before one eye, which can save weight and power but may feel less natural for extended reading. A binocular system presents coordinated information to both eyes, supporting a wider or more balanced viewing experience and, in some products, stereoscopic content. 8. What is the difference between a HUD and spatial AR?

A HUD places information in a view-relative panel; turning your head generally moves the panel with you. Spatial AR attempts to anchor content to positions in the environment and usually needs tracking such as 3DoF or 6DoF. A HUD is sufficient for captions or prompts; anchored windows and room-scale overlays need stronger tracking, sensors, software, and compute. 9. Do smart glasses replace a smartphone?

Usually not. Most consumer glasses depend on a phone for networking, accounts, AI services, app control, or compute. Ray-Ban Meta requires the Meta AI app and a compatible phone; MentraOS deliberately runs miniapps on the phone; tethered display glasses need a video source. Treat current glasses as a wearable interface to a phone or companion computer unless the product explicitly provides a standalone operating system and connectivity. 10. Are smart glasses the same as VR headsets?

No. VR headsets block or camera-reconstruct the outside world and prioritize immersion. Everyday smart glasses usually preserve direct vision and add audio, capture, or limited displays. Tethered XR glasses can create a large virtual screen but remain lighter and less immersive than a full headset. The trade is capability versus weight, discretion, battery, and social usability.
